Exo One


EXO ONE is a surreal, exoplanetary exploration game. Drift and flow across enigmatic alien landscapes using a gravity based movement system. Atmospheric, diffused visuals are merged with otherworldly sound effects and a hypnotic electric guitar soundtrack.


Exo One is a sci-fi adventure video game developed by Australian developer Exbleative and published by Future Friends Games for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Microsoft Windows via Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store.[4] The game launched on November 18, 2021.[5] It is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 during Q3 2022.[6]


Premising humanity's first mission outside the Solar System, players take control of an alien spacecraft and travel across the surface of surreal worlds.[7] The craft utilizes three modes of movement; roll, glide and fly; to gather momentum and propel forward, enabling players to explore the skies or dive into the oceans of a particular planet.[8] Exploration is highlighted by an electric guitar soundtrack as well as a vocal narration delving into the game's story.[9]


Influenced by momentum-based titles like iOS mobile game Tiny Wings, as well as atmospheric indie adventure Journey,[10] lead developer Jay Weston began full-time work on Exo One in early 2016,[7] and launched a successful Kickstarter campaign for the project in 2017.[11] In addition, Tim Mcburnie served as a conceptual artist for the game, musician Rhys Lindsay provided the soundtrack, while programmer Dave Kazi assisted Weston with coding.[8]


Exo One is an action adventure game based on movement. Created by solo developer Exbleative over the past five years, players explore alien worlds, pushing forward in an alien-like ship which harnesses momentum to create energy.


The story of Exo One mostly takes a backstep to the gameplay, but there is a loose narrative thread that drives the player forward at all times. Players follow a strange signal from planet to planet, while experiencing visions of an interplanetary mission gone wrong. While it is a bit vague in places, it does tie together nicely in the end.

The story is not clear cut and is hinted at in a series of flashbacks, memories and half remembered conversations as the game progresses. It is suggested that disaster befell a team of Astronauts on the first manned mission to Jupiter. Plans for an alien ship design are discovered and a journey begins with players guiding what appears to be the only surviving astronaut across the landscapes of numerous unknown planets in this strange ship. It is not immediately clear why, but he needs to traverse each wildly different environment until he gets to and can make use of massive structures known as Transport Monoliths. These allow him to hop from planet to planet towards his unknown destination and a strangely satisfying conclusion.


Each Planet has a completely different geographical make up and environmental conditions. One may have a hot volcanic surface while the next is almost completely made up of ocean. Deep valleys of smooth rock exist in one environment, yet another takes the form of endless sand dunes. The only constant that all these places have in common is that they are littered with alien structures that are not only very large but are made of the same black and obviously manufactured material.


Using a simple yet unique control system, Right Trigger increases gravity on the ship and causes it to drop to the surface of whichever planet is being explored. The rolling of this spherical version of the ship allows it to pick up momentum and using the left trigger (which makes the craft change into a disc shaped flying form) can be used to take off.
